Orwell Essay
It was hard to read and understand Orwell's essay but it was totally worth it. It's amazing to see how people manipulate words and phrases to get away with many things. It was kind of ironic that many parts in his essay were very confusing and used complex words like does in his examples, I guess it has alot to do with the essay being written so long ago. The question that keeps bothering me is if we should completely get rid off bad english or should we keep some of it?

How do we get rid of bad English? I know Orwell said we can fix the problem of bad writing, but then he commented the very same issues within his essay. So I don't think we can even get rid of "bad English." Speakers are always going to use meaningless words, that is shown all throughout history and Kate showed us a few recent examples during class yesterday. So my answer to your question is "no" and it never will happen.
ReplyDeleteHere's another thought that has been bothering me from Orwell's essay. Since one of his main points was to be a clearer writer, then why was his essay so hard to understand? Why didn't he just simplify what he was trying to say, and write something we all were saying in class about his essay? You'd think from what Orwell said about writing that the better writer is a clearer one, yet he's considered as great writer...this seems a little ironic. I'm not trying to be naïve here just critical.

I wonder if anybody else back in this time era thought the way Orwell did? Reading this article makes me want to go but 1948 and read it, just to see what else he has to say about it.
