Fashionably Late

As I was reading the assignments for this week, I pondered the thought, “Does fashion really matter?” What a person chooses to wear does not give a stranger any preconceived notions. Or does it? I was reminded of my mother’s favorite movie “The Devil Wears Prada” In this chick flick Andy Sachs, the main character, applies for a job at Runway Magazine. In the beginning of the movie, she is getting dressed giving the main focus of the entire movie on clothes. During the first half of the movie Andy is often criticized for her lack of fashion sense. In the second part, she is transformed into a fashionista. As a result, she is welcomed at her job and gets promoted. I believe what I wear, or do not wear for that matter, silently states something about myself, and what I choose to wear will affect how others see me in the long run. As stated in the movie trailer, “It’s not just about what you wear, it’s about who you are.”

  1. Your sentence that begins with "I believe....." I agree with from the beginning to the end!!!! But, I really do believe that what you wear causes people to give preconceived notions. Better yet judge you by what you wear. For instance, if a girl (or young lady) has on very short shorts, tight shirt and some heels or sexy/sassy shoes men (particularly but not all) will think oh yes she's "hot" and I know i'll be able to "get in her pants" right? They will go out of their way to try and get her attention and her number so that they can get an advantage. Wrong....just because she wears those things does not mean thats what she is about.

Versus a woman that dresses conservative maybe even a business suit on the regular. People think oh she's about her business but her true character could be what was assumed with the girl in the short shorts. In this case men (not all) most likely wouldnt be breaking their necks to try and get her number because they know that they wont be able to get what they want as easy as the other example I used!!.....I hope you get the point I am trying to make :)

  4. I love that movie! And I feel like I was kind of like her in my sense of style I didn't really know how to dress let’s just say "What Not To Wear" has helped me a lot, and I totally agree with “It’s not just about what you wear, it’s about who you are.” Statement very well said.

  6. Lets also remember that the way we dress also makes an impact on our selves on the way we act and behave. In the movie, The Devil Wears Prada, Andy Sachs changes more and more as she dresses better, leaving her boyfriend and sleeping with that other man. In rich highschools kids are forced to wear suits to make them look and feel more serious. I guess its like a costume, you wear it and become what it represents. So you have to be sure of what you want to represent.
