From the article Modern-Hunter Gatherer by Michael Pollan in the section "making meat" paragraph number four this sentence stuck out a lot to me: "Then he reached in and pulled gently and the rest of the organs tumbled out onto the ground in a heap, up from which rose a stench so awful it made me gag." It made me cringe when I read the sentence above and at that moment it crossed my mind...."am I really a lover of meat?" I mean I know that I love a good steak, some spaghetti with ground chuck in it, sausage, bacon, bacon burgers and I can eat chicken everyday all day in every way :). But, why is it that when people bring to my attention the details of the torture of an animal, which eventually became my lunch or dinner, I begin to feel sick and visualize the scene in which the animal died so that I and many others can eat happily. I dont think that I can live on veggies for the rest of my life and I dont like the idea od eating "fake meat." So, shouldnt I be a PROUD MEAT EATER at all times even when I hear the disgusting details of how my lunch eventually became my lunch?

lol i have only once hunted and that sentence from the story remined me of excatly what happends when you clean a deer. It's was after all my first time, at first I was disgusted but then after dinner i never thought about it again.

I guess i totally understand your point of view but in my case, i see this as a food chain and those animals are simply here for us to enjoy their meat and their lovely presence in the animal kingdom. I have personally never gone hunting but i have opened and cleaned many animals before and i must say that at first it gets to you but once the meat is clean cut and ready to go all your thinking about is whens dinner.
ReplyDeleteI can definitely tell you, with out a doubt, that I am a lover of meat and a proud meat eater. However, I do understand where you are coming from. Blood and guts gross me out. I don't know what I would do if I lived back in the pioneer days. When the women went into the chicken coop to pick out the plumpest chicken for that nights dinner, and then proceed to chop off the head of the rooster or hen, and pluck off the feathers! I grew up around chickens, but they were a pet not on the menu for dinner.

ReplyDeleteTo answer the question "Meat lover of not?" Yes! I can immensely enjoy a juicy steak that is spilling over with flavors or an overly seasoned chicken baked to perfection on my dinner menu any day. Although I totally side with on the details, on how the animal that I'm eating died before I was able to enjoy its meat. It grosses me out just thinking about it too. But none of these reasons stop me from enjoying an unforgettable luscious medium rare steak for my evening's meal.
